We needed to resupply the trailer with water and empty the tanks so dry camping wasn't an option. Like most RV sites it was very cramped and odd and pretty much just a parking lot in the back of a motel.
Jason and I rode together today. Dawit was down and out and rode along with the truck as he was having, ahem, saddle issues. Robert decided he didn't want to ride with us anymore and would eventually depart from the group in Whitehorse.
June 10 – We decided to take it easy today. After loading up the trailer we all drove out
together to start our ride from Dawit’s crash site. From there we’d go about 60km or so just to
test the waters and see how everyone was feeling. Fate had different plans for us once
again. About 10min into our drive the
serpentine belt on the truck decided to let go.
We were stranded with no cell phone service for about 100km!

I checked out the town and learned about the hardy folks of the Klondike gold

really hoping that NAPA had the proper serpentine belt I stock. If not I would be stuck in Dawson for 2 or 3
more days waiting for the part to arrive.
The crew had no way of knowing what I was up to. Did I mention I was also squatting in the

We spent most of our day off by updating our social media,
cleaning the trailer of as much Dempster dust as possible, and converting the
bikes from gravel wheels and tires to our road slicks.

Our first pavement ride should have been smooth sailing but fate
had other plans for our travelling show. The day started off as good as
any cyclist could ever hope. Even though we had a giant tail wind riding
into Dawson City two days before we were thankfully shooed out of town by a
generous tail wind once again.

The buttery smooth pavement of the Dawson City limits quickly came
to an end and we spent most of the day riding what could be described as gravel
with a light spritz of tar. Crashing at any time on a bicycle is not very
much fun but on this chip tar surface it is extra nasty. Unfortunately
that's exactly what happened. About 120km into our 150km ride we came
around a corner going fairly quickly, say 35kph, and were greeted by a bear
about 100m away in the middle of the road. The group slowed before all of us had time to react and 2 of us went down. Dawit unfortunately took the
hardest hit by landing on his face and getting the wind knocked out of him. Robert's landing was thankfully softened by Dawit and was mostly OK. We immediately began to go through the routine of administering first
aid. I am actually really relieved that I just took the course again only
a few months ago as it helped to keep the situation (me) calm. We had a
first aid kit with us and some very helpful motorists stopped to see
if there was any way they could help. We asked them to drive Dawit to our
camp site which was 25km away which they happily obliged.

Jason, Robert, and I had a very somber ride back to camp that
night. We pretty much sprinted back and it was the longest 25km I have
ever ridden. A million thoughts about what to do next were going through
our heads. As we pulled into the camp site I almost didn't want to know
what the latest diagnosis was as I was fearing the worst.

What we found was Dawit back to his usual happy self, already
making jokes about his increasingly swollen face. Lindsay and Marin took
very good care of him while we were riding back and it was determined that it
was superficial, a hospital visit wasn't required.

Today we concluded the epic gravel road portion of our ride. Most of the day we were pointed downhill with a tailwind so the average speed was very high at 28.5km/h. It was a bittersweet moment leaving the Dempster. On one hand it felt amazing rolling on to smooth pavement. On the other hand we were sad to be leaving the epic scenery and isolation of one of the best roads I've ever ridden.
Today's ride to Tombstone would take us up high into the mountains and wind very close to the snow line.
Just as we were heading up into the higher elevation we were lucky enough to see some mountain goats jumping around on a rocky slope so we stopped for our hourly snack break.

Nearing the end of our 122km ride we were feeling pretty good. We picked up the pace on the last climb and had an awesome downhill into Tombstone.
We stayed an extra day at Ogilvie which gave us all the chance to heal up. The Dempster was much more difficult than we had expected and it was a good idea at this point to make sure everyone was doing OK. Today's ride was shorter at just over 66km so it would be a good test to see how Dawit was feeling.

Heading out from our campsite we had a nice long downhill which got everyone fired up. The rest of the ride was smoother roads and a tailwind. We had our fastest average speed so far at 24.5km/h. Spirits were definitely high at this point and we were all feeling a little better about some day making it to Newfoundland.
I am the only one with cell service currently and have limited resources so bear with me.
On Friday during our first ride out of Dawson and also our first pavement ride we ran in to our first patch of particularly unfavorable luck. About 120km into our 150km ride Dawit had a pretty bad crash when we slowed down for a bear crossing the road (of all things). He landed pretty hard on his face and knocked the wind out of himself. Some very kind motorists stopped (no shortage of them around here) and drove Dawit to our campsite where Marin and Lindsay took care of him while the remaining 3 of us had a very sombre ride back to camp. When we arrived we learned that Dawit was actually doing pretty good and was in good spirits as usual.

So we changed our plans for the next day. We would drive back up the road 30km to where the crash happened and start from there. We'd do an easy few hours and set up camp again just to make sure everyone was doing OK still.
On Saturday we all hopped in the truck for the short drive to where our ride would resume. Unfortunately this is where we got our second bout of bad luck. About 15km from camp the serpentine belt on the truck disintegrated and we were stuck on the highway. Robert hitched a ride to Dawson as we had no cell service. CAA sent a tow truck which took about 4 hours to arrive. Robert came back with a relative from Dawson and they towed the trailer about 500m up the road to a pullout where they are now camped. I went with the truck to Dawson and am waiting for the Napa to open tomorrow and hopefully they have the belt in stock. I should be able to meet back up with the gang tomorrow (Monday) and we can continue our ride to Whitehorse. We should arrive there around Thursday.

For now I am hanging out in the truck camper. I had a nice tour of Dawson City today with a great lunch and checked out the museum. I'm sure there will be lots of updates when we all get to Whitehorse.
Over'n out.
Early season fitness aka no fitness was starting to take its toll. We were all feeling pretty good until a long climb out of the Ogilvie River lowlands put us back out into the exposed and windy high mountain range. Dawit was feeling very sick and tired for the last 20km. He promptly went to bed without eating and slept most of the next 36 hours.
Also we were feeling pretty tired from the first day of riding. There would be no reprieve on day 2 as we did a whole lot of windy mountain riding out of Rock River.

Riding parallel to the mountains for a few hours provided us with a relentless side wind that had a bit of a chill to it too. In the back of my mind I was happy that the weather was still much nicer than it was when we were driving out to our starting point. A few drops of rain reminded us of that as well. We stayed dry though and after a really fun downhill to the Eagle River we finished our day with a steep and long climb up to the pseudo civilization of Eagle Plains.
The ferries to Inuvik were still about 7 days away from being open due to some mechanical issues so we decided that 150km north of the Arctic circle was as close to the Arctic ocean as we were going to get.

We were met with some pretty incredible mountain riding less than 5km after leaving the river bank with a lot of uphills and not very many downhills. We had a quick lunch on top of a mountain at the Northwest Territories border. We were feeling pretty tired but the wind was howling and we knew we had to keep moving to get to shelter. We rode what thankfully seemed like a short, mostly downhill 20km to our very nice campsite at Rock River.
Stage 7 (The end)Planned for August 12 - 31

Well it's been a long journey thus far but the end is almost in sight. It feels like a lifetime since this virtual trip started. I'm sure the real thing will go by much faster.......
This part of the route is open to interpretation and depends on a few factors. Okay really just one factor. What day in August it is when we actually get here. There are definitely plans to go across PEI and also to spend a while in Newfoundland. However we'll just say it ends in Sydney for now, how we get to St John's is still a mystery (though I'm sure it will involve a ferry).

Here we go right through my home town, Peterborough. Google says it's the best way to go so who am I to argue. Admittedly for the first time while posting these maps I used the handy bicycle feature on Google and it looks to be routing us on a bunch of sections of the Trans Canada Trail which would be really cool. Not sure how easy that would be to program into my Garmin, judging from my history of trying to get my Edge 1000 to work properly I can tell you that it will probably be extremely frustrating ;-)
The end is really sneaking up on us here though I'm not sure it will feel that way during the ride. We finish stage 6 in Drummondville Quebec.

This leg of the journey brings Jason and I into the part of Canada we call home, Ontario. From doing a bit of research and digging we have found that while cycling across the continent you really ought to avoid Thunder Bay due to heavy traffic concerns. With some help I was able to find what I think should be a really nice route through Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan to bring us over to Sault Ste Marie. This part of the ride finishes in the town of South Baymouth with views of Lake Huron.

Now we roll through the prairies. Most of the route from this point isn't set in stone, it's just something I've put together quickly as a general guideline. However it will follow very closely to this map.
The prairies will be happening during potentially some of the hottest weather of the year. It's hard to say what the weather will do. The trailer has air conditioning so maybe we'll have to hibernate in there at every opportunity. Hopefully we don't encounter too many summer storms. The winds should definitely be in our favour. Combine that with the flatness of the terrain and this could be a good recipe to get ahead on our mileage.
It's hard to say how quickly we'll make it through this stage so we'll stay with our goal of 150km/day (with one day off every 7 days). One advantage of making up some mileage is that we can spend more time exploring Newfoundland.
Stage 3Stage three takes straight through the heart of the Rockies and away from the Pacific Ocean. After about 26 days of riding and over 3,000km we are finally heading east! May the winds be at our back :-D
Stage three is right about 1500km and should take us 11 or 12 days to complete. Choosing to take HWY 11 east out to Rocky Mountain House should keep us away from the busier centers of Calgary and Edmonton. I'd expect we'll be rolling in to Red Deer by about July 8 or 9. Will we be sick of the hills and happy to leave the mountains behind? The prairies will have their own challenges I'm sure. It's hard to say what adventures are in store for stage three. I can say that amazing scenery is a guarantee.
Stage 2Who'da thought but Stage 2 picks up where Stage 1 left off. Whitehorse! We roll over to Watson Lake and keep heading south picking up HWY 37 through the Rockies. Call me crazy but I'm really looking forward to this part. I've heard it can be difficult for riders due to how remote the highway can be but I would almost consider that to be a welcome feature with our support truck and RV trailer it should let us relax and just enjoy the view. Hopefully we escape out of the north before the bugs get really bad.
As soon as we get to Terrace we take a bit of a detour and head west out to Prince Ruper for dip number two! This leg of the journey is about 1400km and I would expect it to take us about 10 or 11 days. Our Pacific Ocean dip should happen around June 27th.
Probably for the best that I usually only come here for a week or so at a time though. Keeps it magical ;-)

We found a herd of Zama bison. Apparently they are the imported larger wood bison variety. I think my lense did pretty good at 10x zoom and the heli shaking like crazy.

Have you ever seen a river that runs through a lake? Zama Lake is pretty cool (no pun intended)

Wasn't sure if this would look as cool as it did in person. Almost looks like a reflection on a lake.

I've been geeking out on the time-lapse function of my camera and did one of me riding my rollers in my camp room the other day. I'll upload it when I get back to some civilized internet.

Today is just about 3 months until we start our big bike ride. I really want to make sure that I am physically prepared for the riding after spending so much time preparing the equipment. Time to shift my focus a little and give the bike portion of our trip the respect it deserves. I'm lucky that endurance has always been my greatest strength but best not to get too cocky before the first km has even been ridden.

Stay interesting :-)

It has been a busy February at work so my riding has not been happening as much as I'd like. My cross continent bike is also my general "beater" camp bike. I try to bring this thing everywhere. It's definitely the one bike I could not live without. I'll go through the specs in a later post.

The days are starting to get longer around here which is nice

I packed everything in the work truck and headed off to Zama City for the next week or so.

Normal highway conditions for half the year. Can you seen the 18 wheeler 100' in front of me?

You get funny looks when you are unloading your truck at camp.

It's definitely nice to have the option to ride even when I'm away. In the summer I still bring the bike but can ride outside which is lots of fun in these remote locations.

Stage 1Stage one of our ride this summer begins in the lovely town of Prudhoe Bay Alaska then takes us over to Whitehorse YT. Not much selection on route here so it's as simple as plugging Prudhoe Bay into our starting point and Whitehorse as the finish. We are thinking we should start riding around June 2 and arrive in Whitehorse two weeks later around June 16th.
I've noticed the cheaper tanks require a water based solvent which are almost always acidic so here is an easy way to protect your tank from corrosive solvents.

Step one - Attach some copper wire to some scrap aluminum by using a steel bolt. Here I used a scrap piece of an old Stan's rim. I sanded it down a little so that the bare aluminum could be in contact with the fluid in my tank. In my case I use about 1 gallon of purple power to about 12 gallons of water. The acidity will only affect the consumption rate of the aluminum, the tank will be safe as long as you install a new piece of aluminum when the old piece gets consumed.

Step two - Attach the other end of that wire directly to the tank (inside or out, doesn't matter).

Step 3 - Submerge scrap aluminum inside the tank

That's it, you're done. The most important part is that the aluminum is electrically continuous with the steel in the tank and that the aluminum is placed inside the fluid.

Here you can see I measured the results using a CuCuSO4 reference cell. My native steel potential is about -593mV. Minimum protection is -693mV. With the aluminum anode I have achieved -1136mV which proves that the steel is easily being protected by the aluminum.

Native steel potential of the tank and reference cell for testing. This was taken before the aluminum was placed in the tank.

Now protected at -1136mV. This is after the aluminum was submerged in the tank. Note: this only works if the aluminum is somehow connected to the tank.

All done
